Dr Alex Setchfield

Alex is a qualified biological scientist having obtained a PhD in Mechanistic Biology from the University of York, in collaboration with Fera Science Ltd. He also holds a Master’s degree in Industrial Biotechnology, and a first-class Bachelor’s degree in Biology.

During his PhD, Alex developed a patent-pending microbial bioconversion process to transform crop waste and residues into feed for Black Soldier Fly larvae, an alternative protein-rich feed for monogastric livestock such as pigs, chickens, and fish.

Following his PhD, Alex worked as a Venturing Business Scientist within Strategic and International Growth at Fera Science Ltd., where his role involved various responsibilities including business development and consultancy, and the development of strategic academic partnerships and translational research projects focussed on topics such as plant health, soil and water quality, and novel food and feed sources.

Away from work, Alex is an avid motorsport fan and classic car enthusiast, and enjoys being in the great outdoors as much as possible in his home county of North Yorkshire.
