Labour & Machinery Efficiency Dashboard

This interactive dashboard offers a clear, data-driven overview of key labour and machinery efficiency metrics across UK arable farms. Developed by Ceres Research, it enables users to benchmark their operations against anonymised industry data, facilitating informed decisions to enhance farm profitability and resilience.

Drawing on comprehensive reviews conducted on AHDB’s Arable Monitor Farms and from Ceres Rural’s farm database,, the dashboard provides benchmarks for the below metrics:

  • Cropped hectares per arable labour unit
  • Litres of diesel used per cropped hectare
  • Horsepower per cropped hectare
  • Cropped hectares per metre of spray boom
  • Drilled hectares per metre of drill
Combined hectares per metre of cutter bar

These benchmarks provide a starting point for assessing operational efficiency. For instance, a low number of cropped hectares per labour unit might indicate potential for labour reallocation or diversification opportunities. Similarly, high diesel usage per hectare could suggest areas to optimize cultivation intensity or reduce road travel.

By comparing your farm's figures with industry averages, you can identify areas for improvement and develop a strategic plan to enhance efficiency and reduce costs.

Benchmark Your Yields

Harvest 2024 Yield Comparison – Benchmarking Performance Across the UK
This interactive dashboard provides a clear and visual comparison of 2024 crop yields across UK farms. Built by Ceres Research to support informed benchmarking, it enables users to compare their farm’s average yields against anonymised regional and national datasets for a range of key combinable crops.

With filters for county and region, and simple data entry for your own yields, the dashboard helps identify performance outliers, highlight strengths, and inform future agronomic decisions. Each crop is displayed using a box plot to clearly show variation, distribution and where your farm sits in relation to others.

Use this tool to engage in meaningful comparisons, understand yield variability, and drive continuous improvement on-farm.
